EIU Women Win OVC Track Championship

Panther men place second at conference championship

NASHVILLE – Eastern Illinois women's track and field won its first Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track Championship since 2013 and seventh overall on Saturday afternoon.  The EIU men placed second in the championship event held on the campus of Tennessee State.
 
EIU's women's team scored 163 points with Tennessee State placing second with 144.5 points.  Austin Peay was a distance third with 81 points.
 
Southeast Missouri won the men's title with a commanding 199.5 points. EIU was second with 140.5 followed by TSU in third with 133.
 
On Saturday five Panthers had first place finishes with a total of ten individuals and two relay teams earning medals.
 
Amy Yeoman won the women's 1500m run with a time 4:31.13 as one of two first place finishes for the women's championship team.  Bryn Buckwalter won the women's shot put with a throw of 48'3.50". 
 
Eric Gordon picked up his second gold medal on the championships for the EIU men winning the decathlon on Saturday.  Gordon placed first on Friday in the pole vault.  He captured the decathlon on Saturday in the final event.  
 
On the track Jamal Robinson was a double gold medal winner for the Panthers in sprints.  Robinson won the 100m dash with a time of 10.66.  He won the 200m dash with a time of 21.45. 
 
Calvin Edwards was a second place finisher in two sprint events.  He was second in the 200m with a time of 21.49.  He was second in the 400m with a time of 47.83.  Christian Ilunga-Matthiesen placed third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.73.
 
The EIU men's 4x100m relay was second in the championships.  The relay team posted a time of 40.76 with Johnathan Boey teaming with Edwards, Robinson and Ilunga-Matthiesen.
 
The women's 4x100m relay placed third with a time of 46.12.  The relay team consisted of Angelica Anyaogu, Briana Walker, Anita Saffa and Darneisha Spann.
 
Brion Portis closed out the women's medal winners on Saturday placing third in the triple jump with a mark of 41'01".  
 
Tyler Yunk closed out the men's medal winners on Saturday placing third in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:48.24.  

Tom Akers was named the OVC Women's Track Coach of the Year.
