Track All-Americans 2014

NEW ORLEANS – Eastern Illinois seniors Peter Geraghty and Mick Viken both earned All-American honors in track on Monday afternoon as announced by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).  Both seniors competed in the pole vault at last week's NCAA National Championships in Eugene.

Geraghty was named a first team All-American by finishing fourth in the pole vault.  He cleared 18'0.50" in the meet.  Geraghty becomes EIU's 10th NCAA Division I first team All-American in outdoor track and the first since Ron White was a two-time first team All-American in the javelin in 2001 and 2002.  The fourth place finish at the National Championships is the highest by an EIU male competitor since Dan Steele won the 400m hurdle national championship in 1992.  Earlier this year Geraghty earned second team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Track Championships.

Viken earned second team All-American honors finishing his career with his third straight second team honor.  Viken cleared 18'0.50" at the NCAA Championships but finished ninth based on number of attempts.  The ninth place finish was the best of Viken's career after placing 12th at the two previous NCAA National Championship events.
