Indoor Track Opens Strong At Iowa State

Three women's athletes move into EIU Top 10

AMES, Iowa – Zye Boey continued his outstanding freshman season while three Eastern Illinois female athletes cracked the career top ten as the Panthers wrapped up the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic, an event that features competitors from 80 schools.

Boey placed second in the 200m sprint with a time of 21.32 which was good enough to win his heat. Justin Austin of Kentucky won the event with a time of 21.13.

Freshman Tyler Carter was 8th in the long jump with a jump of 23’03.50” which matched his season best.  Aaron Iaun posted a ninth place finish in the 5000m run with a time of 15:13.44.

On the women’s side three athletes posted personal bests which all moved them up or into the EIU career top ten.

Shawana Smith placed 13th in the 200m dash with a time of 24.85 which was her best mark of the season and ranks third at EIU.

Distance runners Caitlin Napoleoni and Erin O’Grady both vaulted into the EIU top ten with to times. Napoleoni placed 10th in the 5000m run with a time of 17:52.56 which ranks second all-time at EIU. O’Grady was 19th in the 3000m run at 10:15.31 which landed in 8th on the EIU list.

Junior Kandace Arnold posted a top ten finish in the weight throw with a distance of 57’04.25 placing 9th.

EIU continues action in the Iowa State Classic at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
