Panther Track Opens Season With EIU Early Bird

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's track opened the indoor season on Friday hosting the EIU Early Bird meet against Indiana State and Southeast Missouri at the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse.

EIU posted seven individual first place finishes while winning three of the four relay events.  Five athletes posted marks that landed in the EIU career top ten including junior Mick Vikenwho passed his own school record in the pole vault winning the event with a height of 17'5.  Freshman Eric Gordon competing in his first collegiate event was second in the pole vault with a height of 16'0.75” which landed him in eighth on the Panthers career list.

In the women's pole vault All-American Jade Riebold picked up where she left off in the 2012 season by winning the event.  Riebold cleared 13'4.50”.

Bryce Hogan and Maura Cummins added first place finishes for EIU in field events.  Hogan won the triple jump with a mark of 42'6.75”.  Cummins won the high jump with a mark of 5'6.50” which ranked eighth on the EIU career list.  Condia Smith landed in sixth on the EIU career list in the women's weight throw.  Her throw of 54'10.75” placed second.

On the track EIU added three individual first place finishes by Erika RamosCody Boarmanand freshman Calvin Edwards.  Ramos won the women's mile in a time of 5:05.73.  Boarman won the men's 400m race with a time of 49.49.  Edwards took home first place honors in the 200m dash with a time of 22.10.

The relay victories for EIU came in the both distance medley relays and the men's 4x400.  The women's DMR was comprised by Kelsey HardimonJustine MooreAmy Yeoman and Ramos with a time of 12:58.0.  The men's DMR was comprised of Bryce BastingRyan Ballard,Ephraim Dorsey and Sean Wiggan with a time of 10:34.61.  The men's 4x400 relay team included Boarman, Edwards, Dominique Hall and Christian Kolb with a time of 3:20.09.  The women's 4x400 relay was second with a time of 3:59.00 with team members Janessa Clay, Cummins, Dhiaa Dean and Katie Ryan.

Jalisa ParamoreStephanie Peisker and Britney Whitehead rounded out the second place finishers for the EIU women.  Paramore was second in the 60m hurdles with her time of 8.56 ranking fifth on EIU's career list.  Peisker was second in the 800m with a time of 2:22.96.  Whitehead was second in the 3,000m with a time of 10:33.52.

Lamarr Pottinger, Dorsey, Wiggan and Pablo Ramirez rounded out the second place finisher for the Panther men.  Pottinger was second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.24.  Dorsey was second in the 600m with a time of 1:22.91.  Wiggan was second in the 800m with a time of 1:54.95.  Ramirez was second in the 3,000m with a time of 8:40.14.

EIU will be off for the holiday break returning to action on January 19 when EIU hosts the John Craft Invite.
