BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois track athletes opened the 2009 outdoor season much the way they ended the indoor season as three athletes were named the OVC Athletes of the Week following their season opening efforts at the Georgia Relays

Senior Brenton Pegues was named the men’s track athlete of the week while junior Kandace Arnold and sophomore Catilin Napoleoni swept the women’s track and field athlete of the week honors.

Pegues earned a pair of first place finishes for the Panthers at the Georgia Relays. He won the 400-meter dash in a time of 28:20 and ran the opening leg on the 4x400 meter relay that placed first at 3:15.17.

Arnold posted two top five finishes and a sixth place effort in the spring season opener. She was second in the shot put at 47’11.75” just missing her personal best by a quarter of an inch. She was fifth in the discus at 144’03” and sixth in the hammer throw. Her hammer throw mark of 156’05” ranks third all time at EIU.

Napoleoni shaved 16 seconds off her career best time as she finished fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Her mark of 11:24.84 moved her into fourth on the EIU career list in the event.

The Panthers return to action this Saturday in the Indiana State Invite. EIU hosts its lone home meet on April 2-4 with the Big Blue Classic and Neil Moore Multi’s.
