Brooks, Golden Win OVC Track Awards

Panthers add two weekly honors

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois picked up a pair of weekly track awards as DeMarcus Brooks and Chandra Golden were honored as the Ohio Valley Conference Male and Female Track Athletes of the Week.

For Brooks it was the third time this season that the freshman sprinter from Springfield, Ill., has won the weekly outdoor honor. Brooks won the 100m dash with a time of 10.33 which moved him into fourth place on the EIU career list. He was second on the 200m dash finishing behind teammate Zye Boey with a time of 21.12. Additionally, Brooks was a member of the 4x100 relay team that won at the Memphis Invite and landed in tenth place on the EIU career list with a time of 40.85.

Golden picked up her first outdoor OVC honor as the redshirt junior hurdler from Normal, Ill., helped the EIU women place second at the Memphis Tiger Invite. Golden won the 100m hurdles in a time of 13.70 which matched her school record and hit the NCAA Regional standard. She was runner-up in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.01 running the event for the first time this season. She also ran a leg on the first-place 4x100 relay team.

Brooks and Golden will part of a small contingent of EIU runners headed to the Drake Relays this weekend. The majority of the Panthers team will head to the SIU Edwardsville Invite on Saturday. This will be EIU’s final tune-up weekend prior to the OVC Championships on May 1-2.
