CHARLESTON, Ill. - Eastern Illinois men's and women's track returned to the top of the Ohio Valley Conference track ranks as the Panthers swept the 2009 indoor track championships at Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse.  EIU last won the titles in 2007 when they also swept the men's and women's championships.

 

After losing the Ohio Valley Championship title last year for the first time since the 2000 season, the Eastern Illinois Men’s Indoor Track Team reclaimed their place on top as they won the OVC Championship on Saturday at Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse.  The two-day event culmisteeplewebd with another championship and a day full of first place finishes.  The Eastern Illinois Women also took first place overall and became the 2009 OVC Champions.  The Panther women held on to their day-one lead in the standings with a solid showing on Saturday.

In the field events, Kandace Arnold won the women’s shot put with an impressive throw of 46’10.00”. 

The women’s sprinters had a good day, and were highlighted by Shawana Smith’s 200m dash first place finish.  Smith had a time of 25.08.  Chandra Golden finished a close second in the 60m dash on Saturday.  Her time of 7.65 was only topped by a record setting run of 7.55 by Diamond Benjamin of Eastern Kentucky.  Golden also placed second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.64.

Joe Noonan won the men's pole vault with a height of 15'11.25".  Dorrian White took second place in the event with a height of 15'05.50".

On the men’s side of track, Zye Boey paced the Panthers again with a strong day.  He set a meet record with a first place time of 6.67 in the 60m dash, and won the 200m dash with a time of 21.54. Teammate DeMarcus Brooks was second in the 60m at 6.72 with both runners passing the NCAA provisional time.

Marcus Williams won the men’s 400m dash with a time of 49.22.  He was followed closely by teammate Brenton Pegues who finished second at 49.69.

Panther runners David Holm and Clint Coffey placed first and second in the 800m run with times of 1:53.44 and 1:54.06, respectively.  Holm also had a second place finish in the men’s mile run with a time of 4:09.44.

The Panther’s also won an exciting 4x400m relay race.  The team of Sean Wiggan, Brenton Pegues, Zye Boey, and Marcus Williams finished with a time of 3:17.65.

EIU's Zye Boey was the male athlete of the championships while Murray State's Tayler Crawford was the female athlete of the championships.

Below is a synopsis of the finals from day two.

Women’s Shot Put- Kandace Arnold of Eastern Illinois had the best throw on the day and finished first in the women’s shot put at 46’10.00”.  Tanesha Campbell of Tennessee Tech finished second at 46’02.50”.

Men’s Shot Put- Southeast Missouri took first and second place in the men’s shot put.  Josh Uchtman was first with a throw of 53’06.50” and senior teammate Andy Glass had a second place throw of 50’09.50”.

Women’s Triple Jump- Freshman Shemeika Brewer of Southeast Missouri out jumped Lanika Horn of Tennessee State with a first place mark of 39’06.50”.  Horn was second with a jump of 38’02.75”.

Men’s Triple Jump- Tyler Terry of Southeast Missouri had a first place jump of 48’04.50”.  Trenton Britt of Tennessee State placed second with a triple jump length of 46’04.00”.

Women’s Pole Vault- Carrie Burggraf of Austin Peay won the pole vault with a height of 12’05.50”.  Teammate Molly Bartkiewicz finished second at 11’11.75”.

Men’s Pole Vault- Joe Noonan of Eastern Illinois placed first in the pole vault competition at a height of 15’11.25”.  Fellow Panther Dorrian White was second with a height of 15’05.50”.

Women’s Mile Run- Murray State runners took first and second place in the mile run.  Taylor Crawford finished first at 5:04.15, and Katelyn Jones came in second with a time of 5:05.44.

Men’s Mile Run- Evans Kiptoo of Eastern Kentucky narrowly beat out David Holm of Eastern Illinois in the men’s mile run.  Kiptoo finished with a first place time of 4:09.32 and Holm was right behind him at second place with a time of 4:09.44.

Women’s 400 Meter Dash- Tennessee State runner Salisha Marryshow won the 400m dash with a time of 58.04.  Chiamaka Obi of Austin Peay finished a close second at 58.22.

Men’s 400 Meter Dash- A pair of Eastern Illinois Panthers topped the 400m dash.  Marcus Williams was first with a time of 49.22 and Brenton Pegues was second at 49.69.

Women’s 60 Meter Dash- Diamond Benjamin of Eastern Kentucky edged out Eastern Illinois’s Chandra Golden in the women’s 60m dash.  Benjamin set a meet record with her first place time of 7.55 and Golden finished second at 7.65.

Men’s 60 Meter Dash- Freshman standout Zye Boey of Eastern Illinois set a meet record with a first place time of 6.67.  Teammate DeMarcus Brooks finished in second place with a time of 6.72.

Women’s 60 Meter Hurdles- In a close race, Iceca Epps of Eastern Kentucky won the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.61.  Chandra Golden of Eastern Illinois was second with a time of 8.64.

Men’s 60 Meter Hurdles- Tyler Carter of Eastern Illinois placed first with a time of 8.25.  Eastern Kentucky’s Andre Evans placed second with a time of 8.33.

Women’s 800 Meter Run- Murray State Racer Taylor Crawford captured the 800m run with a time of 2:16.20.  Megan Gingerich of Eastern Illinois was second at 2:19.46.

Men’s 800 Meter Run- Eastern Illinois runners claimed the top three spots in the men’s 800m run.  David Holm finished first with a time of 1:53.44.  Senior Clint Coffey was second with a time of 1:54.06, followed closely by Sean Wiggan at 1:54.69.

Women’s 200 Meter Dash- Shawana Smith of Eastern Illinois beat out Rachel Kahle of Southeast Missouri.  Smith’s time of 25.08 was tops, and Kahle was next at 25.34.

Men’s 200 Meter Dash- Zye Boey of Eastern Illinois had another first place finish when he finished the 200m dash with a time of 21.54.  Shannon Davis of Eastern Kentucky finished a close second with a time of 21.72.

Women’s 3,000 Meter Run- Senior runner Stephanie Place of Tennessee Tech easily finished in first place with a time of 10:04.39.  Katelyn Jones of Murray State finished second with a time of 10:20.00.

Men’s 3,000 Meter Run- Eastern Kentucky runners had a photo finish as they place first and second in the 3,000m run.  Evans Kiptoo secured another first place finish on the day when he crossed the finish line at 8:28.64.  Joseph Maina was second with a time of 8:28.74.

Women’s 4x400 Meter Relay- The team of Stymill Conley, Rachel Kahle, Travon Beard, and Jerica Hamm of Southeast Missouri won the relay with a time of 3:57.68.  Finishing in second place was the team of Salisha Marryshow, Jaleeca Jacobs, Autumn White, and Pia Prez of Tennessee Tech with a time of 3:59.12.

Men’s 4x400 Meter Relay- Zye Boey pulled away from the competition in the third leg of the men’s 4x400m relay and lead his Eastern Illinois teammates to a 3:17.65 first place finish.  Sean Wiggan, Brenton Pegues and Marcus Williams are the other relay members.  Southeast Missouri finished in second place with a time of 3:19.41.  The team consisted of Ryan Criglar, Robert Delaria, Danny Stults, and Myron Pettigrew.


Championship points

Eastern Illinois men’s team finished the two-day event with an overall score of 199 points.  They were followed by Southeast Missouri with 140 points, Eastern Kentucky with 105 and Tennessee State at 39 points.

The Eastern Illinois women also finished in first place with a score of 146 points.  Southeast Missouri was second with 108.50 points and Murray State was third with 86 points.
