Boey, Brooks Win OVC Track Awards

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Eastern Illinois’ Zye Boey and Eastern Kentucky’s Stanley Mugo were selected as the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Male Track Athletes of the Year while Murray State’s Taylor Crawford was tabbed as the OVC Female Track Athlete of the Year. Southeast Missouri’ Brandon Colbert took home OVC Male Field Athlete of the Year honors while Southeast Missouri’s Ashley Brewer was picked as the OVC Female Field Athlete of the Year. OVC Male and Female Freshman of the Year  accolades went to Eastern Illinois’ DeMarcus Brooks and Eastern Kentucky’s Diamond Benjamin, respectively.

The awards were announced today in advance of the 2009 OVC Outdoor  Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 1-2 at Tom Samuels Track in Richmond, Ky. Eastern Kentucky plays host to the two-day event, which gets underway Friday at 1:00 p.m. Central.

Boey, a red-shirt freshman sprinter, will be in search of his first 100-meter and 200-meter titles at this year’s championships. The Decatur, Ill., native currently holds the league’s top spot in the 100-meters (10.33) and 200-meters (20.92) has already regionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both events. Early this year, Boey was named the OVC Indoor Male Track Athlete of the Year as well as the Co-Male Freshman of the Year and Indoor Athlete of the Championship. He participated in the 200 meters at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships.  He is currently ranked 14th in the nation in the 100m dash.

A freshman sprinter, Brooks is tied for first in the league with Panther teammate Zye Boey in the 100 meters with a time of 10.33. The Springfield, Ill., native is also second in the 200-meters with a mark  of 21.11.  Brooks has qualified for the NCAA Regional in both events and has been named the OVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on three occasions this season.  His time of 10.33 is ranked 14th in the nation.

Competition for the 2009 OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships gets underway on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Central and will resume on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. CT. Results will be available at www.ovcsports.com following the completion of each day’s events.
