Edwards Named OVC Male Track Athlete

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The Ohio Valley Conference Track and Field Athletes of the Year were announced on Thursday as voted on by the league's track and field coaches.  Six different member institutions were represented by the winners.

Eastern Illinois' Calvin Edwards was named the Male Track Athlete of the Year while Belmont's Hannah Wittman was selected as the Female Track Athlete of the Year. SIUE's Jatavia White earned Female Field Athlete of the Year honors while Southeast Missouri's Kevin Farley was named the Male Field Athlete of the Year. Female Freshman of the Year honors went to Tennessee State's Amber Hughes while Eastern Kentucky's Ambrose Maritim and Southeast Missouri's Chris Martin shared the Male Freshman of the Year accolades.

Edwards owns the fastest 200 –meter time in the OVC this season with a 21.21 at the Meyo Invitational. His 60-meter time of 6.97 also ranks in the league's top 10 this season. Edwards has also competed in the 4x400 meter relay

Wittman owns the top spot in the OVC in both the mile and the 3,000 meters. She ran the in 4:55 in the Southern Cupid Classic and recorded a time of 9:59 in the 3,000 meters at the Gladstein Invitational.
Wright holds the top mark in the OVC in the season in the triple jump with a distance of 42'07.50" which she set at the Meyo Invitational. She also ranks in the top five in the long jump (19'07.00") and the 60-meter hurdles (8.57) both came in the Southeast Missouri vs. SIUE meet.

Farely currently ranks first in the OVC in both the shot put and the weight throw. He set the top mark in the league this season in the shot put at the Indiana Relays with a toss of 59'00.00". His top weight throw distance of 63'03.50" came in the Southeast Missouri vs. SIUE  meet.

Hughes ranks first in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.37 which was set at the Southern Miss Cupid Classic. She also ranks among the top marks in the triple jump with a mark of 36'11.75". Hughes has also competed in the 4x400 meter relay.

Maritim is currently third in the OVC this year with a 3,000 meter time of 8:18 which he set at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational. He also competed in the mile even this year where he set a season-best of 4:20.21.

Martin holds the top spot in the triple jump with a mark of 50'10.00" while also ranking in the top 10 in the high jump (6'04.25") and long jump (23'03.50"). He also competed in the 60 meter hurdles, shot put and pole vault this year.

The OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held this weekend, Feb. 28-March 1 in Nashville, Tenn., at Tennessee State University. The Eastern Illinois men will be looking to capture its 16th overall title and sixth straight while Southeast Missouri women will try to win its eighth overall crown and second straight..
