Springer, Ramos Win Peace To Meece Memorial

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois cross country held the 2nd annual ‘Peace to Meece’ Memorial 5K on Saturday morning at the Panther Trail. Senior Jason Springer won the overall event while sophomore Erika Ramos was the top female finisher in the mixed event. The race is held in tribute to former EIU cross country runner Ryan Meece who passed away in 2009.

Springer won the event with a 5K time of 15:40.62 as he edged out EIU newcomer Ryan Ballard for top overall honors. Ballard placed second at 15:45.49 followed by unattached runner Paul Howarth at 15:55.11.

On the women’s side Ramos placed 26th overall covering the 5K distance at 19:39.75 to cross as the top female competitor. Teammate Gabriela Duenas was second at 19:49.02.

EIU will open its regular season on Sept. 10 when the Panthers host the EIU Panther Open at 5 p.m. on the Panther Trail.
