Bruyn will be a freshman at EIU this fall. He placed 16th in the Class 2A Illinois state cross country meet with a time of 15:00. He helped Belvidere North to a state cross country championship in 2010. In track, he finished 8th in the 800 Meter run at the 2A state meet. He has a personal best of 1:56.75. He was also a part of Belvidere North's 4x800 meter relay state championship team.
