Big Day For Track At Big Blue Classic

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's track and field posted eight first place finishes and nineteen top five finishes on Saturday afternoon as they wrapped up hosting the EIU Big Blue Classic at O'Brien Field.  Three Panther individuals and one relay team posted EIU career top ten marks on the day.

Senior Zye Boey was a two-event gold medalist in his final home meet at O'Brien Field.  Boey won both the 100m and 200m events.  He won the 100m with a time of 10.44 while his winning time in the 200m was 20.96.  Boey also ran the third leg on the 4x100 relay team that finished third with a time of 40.44.  That time ranks second fastest in EIU history.

Kaleel Johnson teamed with Boey on that 4x100 relay team running the anchor leg.  Johnson then placed fifth in the 200m with a time of 21.61.  Kenneth White and Steven Clark were also part of the 4x100 relay squad.

Bryce Basting and Dominique Hall rounded out the first place individual finishers for the EIU men.  Basting won the 800m with a time of 1:51.43 as he just missed cracking the EIU career top ten.  Hall won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.52.

EIU had a pair of first place finishers on the women's side.  Megan Gingerich won the 800m with a time of 2:09.66 as the senior set the EIU Big Blue Classic meet record.  Teammate Erika Ramos placed second with a time of 2:10.49 which is fourth best on the EIU career list.

Britney Whitehead was the winner in the women's steeplechase as she ran a time of 11:00.51.  That mark ranks fourth on EIU career top ten list.

Donald Romero placed his name on the EIU career top ten list with a fourth place finish in the shot put.  Romero's throw of 53'0.75” lands him in 10th on the Panthers career list.  Romero finished second in the discus with a throw of 160'4”.  Jared Diaz was fifth with a distance of 158'3”.

The Panthers 4x400 men's relay team captured first place with a time of 3:13.25.  Stefan GorolJoe AugustineSean Wiggan and Cody Boarman comprised the relay squad.  Boarman and Gorol posted top five finishes in the 400m earlier in the meet.  Boarman placed third at 47.79 while Gorol was fifth at 48.44.

Graham Morris and Tyler Allen completed the EIU men's top five finishers.  Morris placed second in the 5K with a time of 14:37.63.  Allen was third in the triple jump with a leap of 48'1.75”.

On the women's side Maura Cummins and Abigail Schmitz completed the EIU top five finishers.  Cummins was second in the high jump at 5'4.25”.  Schmitz was third in the pole vault at 12'0.5”.

EIU returns to action next weekend competing at the Western Kentucky Hilltopper Relays.
