Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State Look to Defend OVC Indoor Titles

The
Eastern Kentucky men and Tennessee State women will be looking to defend their respective Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field titles this weekend at the 2009 OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day event, set for Feb. 27-28, at Eastern Illinois' Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse in Charleston, Ill., will feature four men’s teams and eight women’s teams.

 

The Colonels have won four total indoor crowns, while the Tigerbelles have claimed three titles.

 

Several past champions will be looking to repeat in the men’s individual events this season. Eastern Illinois’ David Holm is back to defend his 800-meter title in an attempt to three-peat for the event, while teammate Joe Noonan returns to protect his crown in the pole vault. The Panthers' Ryan Bennett, who holds the top weight throw mark (56’04.75”) in the OVC this season, will attempt to regain his 2006 Conference title. Eastern Kentucky’s Shannon Davis will be looking to repeat as the 200-meter dash champion and teammate  Elkana Kurgat is hoping to win his second 3,000-meter crown in three years.

 

On the women’s side, Austin Peay’s Molly Bartkiewicz, will be looking to win her second straight pole vault title. Eastern Illinois' Jenna Uhe, triple jump, and Panther teammate, Kandace Arnold, shot put, look to defend their titles. Arnold is at the top of the Conference Best List for the shot put (47'05.75") will be competing against Southeast Missouri's Ashley Brewer, the 2007 Conference Champion. The Redhawk's Whitney Thomas is back to protect her 55-meter crown while Murray State’s Taylor Crawford is looking to repeat as the 800-meter champion.

 

Competition gets underway at 4:00 p.m. Central on Friday and resumes on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. CT. Results will be available at www.ovcsports.com upon the completion of each day’s events.
