Wednesday, July 20 2011

Eastern Illinois wrapped up the 2011 Big Blue Classic in spectacular fashion as two athletes broke three school records on the final day of competition at O'Brien Field. Zye Boey set a pair of records in sprints while Mick Viken set a new standard in the pole vault.

Boey clipped Claude Magee's school marks in both the 100m and 200m on Saturday as he won both events. Boey won the 100m with a time of 10.15 while winning the 200m at 20.67. Magee's records in those events were both set in the 1984 season with a time of 10.16 in the 100m and 20.68 in the 200m.

Viken set both the school and O'Brien Field record for the pole vault when he cleared 17'4.50”. He broke Mark Hamilton's school record that was set in 1989. The stadium record was set by Darren McDonough of Sycamore High School in 1992. Viken would go on to set the school mark at 17'7.75” later in the outdoor season.
