Runners Post Top Finishes Despite Conditions

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Runners battled through tough conditions that included low temperatures and high winds as Eastern Illinois posted a pair of high finishes at the Notre Dame Gold Division Invite.  The course was extremely wet as severe rain hit the northern Indiana area over the past week.

The tough course conditions did not seem to hamper the EIU women's squad as they finished sixth in a field of 20 top teams.  Grand Valley State, which is ranked nationally in the top five in NCAA Division II, won the race while regionally ranked Northwestern placed second.  GVSU had 40 points with Northwestern scoring 56.  EIU finished with 227.

Olivia Klaus was the EIU women's top finisher for the third straight time this season covering the 5K distance in 18:31.  Audrey Huth of Northwestern was the individual women's winner at 17:29.

Erika RamosBritney WhiteheadMegan Gingerich and Caitlin Napoleoni rounded out the EIU runners scoring points in the race.  Ramos placed 41st with a time of 18:48.  Whitehead was 51st at 18:57, Gingerich 53rd at 18:58 and Napoleoni was 65th at 19:06.

EIU's other four women's entries in the meet were Gabriela Duenas in 66th, Stephanie Peisker in 87th, Paige Biehler in 105th and Chelsea Sondgeroth in 106th.  Duenas posted a time of 19:09, Peisker crossed at 19:35 while Biehler and Sondgeroth were one second apart at 19:57 and 19:58.

Grand Valley State also won the men's Gold Division race as the nationally ranked Division II squad scored 45 points.  Windsor University from Canada was second with 50 points.  EIU placed 8th with 261 points in a field of 20 schools.  The Panthers did finish ahead of regionally ranked Illinois-Chicago which had beaten the Panthers two weeks ago at the Illinois Intercollegiate.

Bradley LaRocque continued to be the Panthers top finisher on the season posting an 8K time of 25:50.  Matt Walters of Windsor was the individual winner at 24:54.

EIU's other scoring entries in the race included Danny Delaney in 52nd, Bryce Basting in 56th,Graham Morris in 71st and Matt Feldhake in 73rd.  Delaney's time was 26:08 followed by Basting at 26:10, Morris at 26:31 and Feldhake at 26:33.

The Panthers other four runners in the race were Ryan Ballard in 75th at 26:37, Jordan Jonesin 94th at 26:52, Victor Delatorre in 115th at 27:17 and Bruyn Yunk in 122nd at 27:27.

EIU returns to action in two weeks at the Bradley Classic in Peoria.
