Cross Country Faces Strong Field At ISU

Panthers compete Friday in Normal. Women at 5 p.m., men at 5:45 p.m.
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's cross country return to action on Friday evening competing at the Illinois State Country Financial Cross Country Invitational at the Weibring Golf Course in Normal. 

The field includes teams from Bradley, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, North Central College and Northern Iowa. The women's 5K race begins at 5 p.m. followed by the men's 8K race at 5:45 p.m.

The Panther men are coming off a first place finish at last week's season opening EIU Walt Crawford Invite. Mike Hesslau won the individual title for EIU and was named the OVC Male Cross Country Runner of the Week. EIU's Pablo Ramirez and Bryce Basting posted top five finishes for the men at the Walt Crawford Invite.

The EIU women had a strong finish with a relatively young squad as they were second at the season opening EIU Walt Crawford. Freshman Emily Brelsfoard was fourth overall earning OVC Female Cross Country Runner of the Week honors. Brelsfoard posted the fourth best time in school history at the 5K distance and the fastest by an EIU runner on the Panther Trail. Sophomore Victoria Quarton joined Brelsfoard in the top ten placing ninth.

The Illinois State Invite features a strong field for both the men and women. On the men's side Loyola-Chicago is ranked 10th in the Midwest Regional rankings while North Central College is ranked No. 1 among all men's NCAA Division III programs. On the women's side Illinois State, Loyola and Bradley are all regionally ranked with the Redbirds of ISU the highest at seventh.
