Men Win Walt Crawford Open, Women Take Second

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois cross country programs completed the Walt Crawford Open on Friday evening. The men took first while the women placed second in the team standings, respectively. 

The Panther men scored 43 points to finish ahead of IUPUI in second with 76 points. The Illinois cross country and track club tied for third with Southern Illinois while North Dakota took fifth in the 11-team field.

Brad LaRocque placed fourth in the 8K run in a time of 25:14.40 to pace the Panthers. Joe Calio was the next EIU runner to cross the finish line in ninth place in a time of 25:30.32 followed by Bryce Basting (12th, 25:33.86), Mike Hesslau (15th, 25:37.56) and Victor Delatorre (16th, 25:38.00). 

Danny Delaney (20th, 25:39.04) and Graham Morris (25:52.33) rounded out the Panther men who scored points.

The Panther women took second in the team standings with 50 points, being edged out by Southern Illinois who captured the team title with 29 points. North Dakota took third followed by Evansville to round out the top four team finishes from the 10-team field.

Olivia Klaus paced the EIU women, finishing the 5K run in fourth place in a time of 18:09.31.Erika Ramos took 12th in a time of 18:31.22 followed in 13th by teammate Britney Whiteheadin a time of 18:33.50. 

Gabriela Duenas and Megan Gingerich took 15th and 16th place in times of 18:40.41 and 18:41.84 while Caitlin Napoleoni and Stephanie Peisker finished in 19th and 20th place to round out the Panthers who scored points. 

The Panthers return to action on Sept. 16 at the Illinois Intercollegiate in Normal, Ill.
