Athletics Hands Out Senior/Academic AwardsThursday, April 12 2012
CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois Department of Athletics held its annual Student-Athlete Honors Dinner on Wednesday night as the Panthers celebrated success both in the class room and on the playing surface. This year's dinner featured the handing out of Senior Athlete Awards as well as academic honors.
Zye Boey was named the Senior Male Athlete of the Year. Boey is a multiple time All-American and All-OVC performer for the men's track team.
Megan Gingerich was named the Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Gingerich is a multiple time All-OVC performer for the women's track and cross country team.
Bridget Sanchez was the first recipient of the Athletic Director's Award which is handed out to a Panther student-athlete that is a successful student, athlete and member of the community. Sanchez is an All-OVC performer for the women's track team as well as a 4.00 student and volunteer in several organizations.
EIU handed out 21 Presidential Awards which are presented to graduating seniors with a 3.75 cumulative GPA and above. The following seniors received awards on Wednesday night: Breanna Bergbower (Cross Country/Track), Megan Gingerich (Cross Country/Track), Bethany Ester (Track), Bridget Sanchez (Track), Kathryn Koester (Golf), Sean Dozier (Golf), David Lawrence (Golf), Ashley Aardsma (Rugby), Christina Crema (Rugby), Hillary Blake (Soccer), Jessica Blake (Soccer), Ashley Eck (Soccer), Amanda Bilina (Softball), Hayley Pieper (Softball), Maria Sorrentino (Softball), Tammy Bowen (Swimming), Matyas Hilgert (Tennis), Annie Egan (Tennis), Chrissie Albers (Volleyball), Brittany Wallace (Volleyball).
Student-athletes were also recognized for with University Awards (GPA between 3.75 – 4.00), Eastern Awards (GPA between 3.50 – 3.74) and Merit Awards (GPA between 3.00 – 3.49).
