Track Opens West Regional Action Thursday

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's track programs will open competition at the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., on Thursday afternoon.  The Panthers are sending six individuals and one relay team to compete in eight events over the three day meet.  The top 12 finishers and relay teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore.
 
Mick Viken and Peter Geraghty will open the competition for EIU as both seniors will take part in the men's pole vault at 1 p.m. on Thursday.  Viken was an NCAA Outdoor All-American in the event last season and is currently 10th in the region with a season best mark of 5.50m.  Geraghty, a transfer into the EIU program, was an NCAA Indoor All-American in the pole vault in March and ranks 4th in the region with a season best height of 5.56m.
 
Jalisa Paramore will represent the EIU women competing in two events.  She competes in the long jump at 2 p.m. on Thursday afternoon and the 100m hurdles on Friday evening.  Paramore is ranked 17th in the region in the long jump with a season best jump of 6.20m.  Her season best 100m time of 13.51 ranks 27th in the region.
 
Kaleel Johnson will compete in the first of his two events at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night as he takes part in the men's 100m dash.  He is currently ranked 34th in the region with a time of 10.43.
 
Calvin Edwards will compete in the first of his three events on Thursday at 7:20 p.m. taking part in the 400m dash.  Edwards will return on Friday evening to participate in the 200m dash.  He is ranked 46th in the region in the 400m with a season best time of 47.23.  He is ranked 48th in the region in the 200m with a season best time of 21.16.
 
Dhiaa Dean wraps up competition for the Panthers on day one competing in the women's 800m run at 8:35 p.m.  Dean is ranked 46th in the region with a season best mark of 2:09.11.
 
The men's 4x100 relay squad will wrap up the West Regional for EIU on Saturday night competing at 6 p.m.  The relay team is ranked 18th in the region with a season best time of 40.09.  The relay team includes Johnson, Edwards, Christian Ilunga-Matthiesen and Jamal Robinson.
