EIU Women's Track Adds Six

Panthers bring in six athletes that advanced to state championship meet
 
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's track and cross country has added six athletes for the 2014-15 season all of whom competed in this past weekend's IHSA State Track Championship meet.  Maria Baldwin, Haleigh Knapp, Nyjah Lane, Darneisha Spann, Lea Viano and Lexie Yeley have signed with EIU track.
 
Baldwin competed at Minonk Fieldcrest High School advancing to the IHSA Class 1A state championships in the 1600m and 3200m run.  She was a state medalist in both events placing 9th in the 1600m and 7th in the 3200m run.  Her championship time in the 1600m was 5:16.09.  Her championship time in the 3200m was 11:13.70.  During the cross country season she placed 21st at the IHSA Class 1A state championships with a finals time of 18:07.
 
Knapp competed at Morris Community High School advancing to the IHSA Class 2A state championships in the high jump.  She was the state champion as a senior clearing 5'8" in the finals finishing her career with three straight IHSA Class 2A titles in the high jump.  As a junior she won the state championship with a height of 5'8".  Her first place mark as a sophomore was 5'7".  Knapp was 8th in the state as a freshman clearing 5'3".
 
Lane competed at Highland Park High School advancing to the IHSA Class 3A state championships in four events.  She competed in the 100m and 200m sprints while taking part in the 4x100 and 4x200m relays.    She placed 8th in the 100m with a finals time of 12.37.  Lane helped the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams win the Skokie Niles West Sectional.  The 4x100m relay time was 49.17.  The 4x200m relay time was 1:44.77. 
 
Spann competed at Schaumburg High School advancing to the IHSA Class 3A state championships in the 200m dash.  She placed 2nd in the Aurora Metea Valley Sectional in the 200m with a time of 26.41.
 
Viano competed at Carlinville High School advancing to the IHSA Class 1A state championships in the 1600m and 3200m run.  She was 17th at the state meet in the 3200m with a time of 11:54.91.  She was second at the Staunton Sectional in the 1600m with a time of 5:30.77.  During the cross country season Viano placed 28th at the IHSA Class 1A State Championships with a finals time of 18:29.
 
Yeley competed at Pekin Community High School advancing to the IHSA Class 3A state championships in the shot put and discus.  She placed 5th in discus with a finals throw of 131'7".  Yeley was second at Rock Island Sectional in the shot put with a mark of 41'7".  Yeley will also participate in women's rugby while at Eastern Illinois.
 
The EIU track team heads to the NCAA West Regional this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.
