Track Set To Defend OVC Championships

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's track will head to SIU Edwardsville this weekend to defend their Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track Championships.  Both the EIU men and women have won five straight OVC Outdoor titles heading into this year's event.
 
The EIU men won last year's title by 33 points over second place Southeast Missouri.  The EIU women won last year's title by 21.5 points over Murray State.
 
The two teams have 13 combined returning athletes that earned medals at last year's championships including five first place finishers.
 
Jalisa Paramore will lead the Panther women after she medaled twice at last year's OVC Championships as an individual.  Paramore won the women's 100m hurdles and placed third in the long jump.
 
Calvin Edwards is the defending champion in the men's 200m dash and also earned a first place medal as part of the 4x100 relay team.  Teammate Kaleel Johnson was second in the 100m last year and also competes on the 4x100 relay squad.
 
Mick Viken is the defending champion in the pole vault and currently ranks in the top 15 in the nation in the event. Newcomer Peter Geraghty is currently third in the nation in the pole vault while Eric Gordon placed third in the event last season at the OVC Championships.
 
David Johansson is the defending champion in the javelin and Pablo Ramirez is the defending champion in the men's 10,000 meter run.
 
Annemarie Reid and Janie Howse are the other two returning medal winners for the EIU women.  Reid was third in the pole vault last season while Howse placed second in the discus.
 
Ephraim DorseyBryce Basting and Max Gassmann are the other returning medal winners for the EIU men.  Dorsey was second in the 800m run.  Basting was second in the 1500m run.  Gassmann was third in the steeplechase.
 
Competition begins on both days at 9 a.m. with the Decathlon and Heptathlon events.
